International Financial Institutions

International Financial Institutions (IFIs) – such as the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank and the Asian Development Bank – are formal international lending agencies operating across country boundaries. They are the largest source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries stimulating economic growth and development.

IFIs play an integral role in the development of international activities for Alberta's private sector. The Alberta government, through the Alberta International Development Office (AIDO) , provides Alberta companies and educational institutions with information on IFI development projects to facilitate new export, investment and partnership opportunities.

Services include:

  • providing Alberta companies and educational institutions with access to information on projects financed by IFIs;
  • providing market intelligence and key contacts for IFIs; and
  • developing and delivering seminars to assist Alberta companies and educational institutions in expanding their export and partnership horizons.

Another valuable tool to expand Alberta’s relationship with IFIs is the Private Sector Liaison Officers (PSLO) Network, of which Alberta has been a member since 2000. The network fosters trade and investment between countries with the support of IFI products and services.
